With its simple construction and ability to be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, a pairs of dark blue jeans are among the most versatile pieces a person can own. This goes doubly so while traveling. Since blue jeans are appreciated around the world, they’ll be a welcome addition to any traveling wardrobe.

I’m a big proponent of buying clothes that can stand the test of time and that are manufactured by people with a passion for what they do. Dao is just such a company, making fantastic jeans at their factory in Nancy, France. They’re committed to doing things differently, with production of their organic cotton denim goods taking place nearly entirely in France (the fabric is mostly sourced from a long term partner factory in Spain).

I found them while searching for “Made in France Jeans” and was taken by their story. I love to find small companies doing things their own way, and Dao is just such a place. You can read more of the backstory on their website, but the attention to detail and quality of production and materials is what really caught my eye. So, onto the jeans!

These made in France jeans are made of tough material, that has a nice bit of stretch

I purchased my FIRST pair of the Paul Comfort Demi-Slim Made in France jeans a few years back. Unfortunately, I foolishly had them hemmed a bit too short and the fit just wasn’t the same! I was heartbroken, but soon purchased my next pair since I loved the first pair so much. 

One of the first things I noticed was the material of these jeans. They’re not selvedge (although Dao does offer some selvedge models from time to time) but they’re definitely solidly built denim with a hint of stretch that gives them their “comfort” name.

The color is a perfect dark blue, with a bright white undertone (or weft for denim fans). What really sets this material apart though is how it looks in the light. The dark blue warp plays interestingly with the white and gives the material a unique depth effect that’s hard to appreciate in photos alone.

The first time I opened a pair of these jeans that fabric stood out to me! The sturdiness offset by the nice bit of stretch and the unique coloring combined to show this was a fantastic example of artisan made denim.

Great fit and comfortable for travel

As for the fit I found these pretty true to size. I typically wear a 32×32 in jeans and chinos and these were no exception. However, the “slim” fit is definitely more of a “skinny” fit by American standards. They’re not skin tight by any means, but they’re more narrow-legged so keep this in mind. What’s more is that the kind people at Dao are more than happy to answer your questions on finding the perfect fit should you be unsure.

What makes these jeans great for travel and everyday wear is the subtle bit of stretch included by just a hint of elastane in the denim material. The feel is smoother to the skin and doesn’t bunch up in the wrong places. That said, these made in France jeans maintain that classic raw denim style and don’t verge into the sweatpants territory that a lot of modern extra stretch jeans start to reach.

Materials and fit covered, what really sets these apart is their subtle French styling. It’s most noticeable in the aforementioned unique sheen the material has that makes you want to look closer. Moving onto the fit, the slimming silhouette that drapes nicely with a touch of stretch adds to the restrained elegance.

But, a closer look will reveal tiny details that truly set these jeans apart.

You’ll find unique thread patterns in key spots on these jeans, like right above the right hand side pocket that give more visual interest. Instead of a large back patch above the pocket, Dao opted for a small leather rectangle sewn directly to the back pocket seam itself. On the inside you’ll see some great red trimming. This isn’t directly visible when you’re wearing them, but that attention to detail is what you can expect from Dao. You’ll appreciate it every time you take these jeans off.

To top it all off, the tag on the inside proudly trumpets “Fabrique en France”. It’s plain to see that this pair of jeans was made by people committed to quality and enduring style.

I went on the hunt for some Made in France jeans and found possibly my favorite pair ever from Dao Davy. These jeans combine impeccable materials, great fit and that subtle French style that can be elusive to find.
